beat tapes for
a quiet apartment.
midnight koi makes lo-fi instrumental records in a one-bedroom in West Oakland. Fifty-three EPs in five years, all on Bandcamp, all pay-what-you-want. No tours, no press shots, no interviews. The Discord is the venue.
/about
a producer, a kettle, and an SP-404.
midnight koi started as a folder on a laptop in 2021. The folder was called koi-beats-quiet. The first tape came out in March of that year, recorded in a hallway with a borrowed AKG and an SP-404 from a neighbour. Most of what gets uploaded since then is recorded the same way. There is no studio. There is no plan. There is a kettle that whistles, sometimes, in the third bar of the third track.
Records get made between 11:30pm and 4am. Each EP runs four to eight tracks, twelve to twenty minutes. Pay-what-you-want on Bandcamp, free on Soundcloud after a week. The masters are loose on purpose. The tape hiss is not an effect. The Discord is the only place koi answers anything personally.

there are no shows. the discord is the show.
koi doesn’t play live and isn’t on social media. The Discord is where new tapes drop first, where the listening rooms run on Sunday nights, where #unfinished gets the rough WIPs nobody else hears, and where the FAQ for the SP-404 chain everyone keeps asking about lives. 2,847 people, fourteen mods, one rule: be quiet, be kind.
